Music at St John’s Beaumont

The aims of the Music School are:

  •  To foster enjoyment and a true love of the subject, from which all else follows;
  • To achieve a balance of inclusivity and the highest standards through perseverance and understanding;
  • To promote the development of performing skills and creative imagination in a collaborative atmosphere for all ages and aptitudes, thereby facilitating access to the immense benefits that result from ability in the subject.

Boys receive weekly class music lessons throughout the School. Taught skills encompass the broad categories of listening, performing, composing and appraising. The auditioned Chapel Choir sings at regular Masses and Night Prayers and at other venues outside School, and their carol services are immensely popular. Instrumental tuition is offered on most orchestral instruments, as well as piano, voice, guitar, drums and bagpipes, while junior choirs and a variety of ensembles meet regularly. In addition, a regular programme at both junior and senior level prepares more advanced boys for scholarships and awards at senior schools, of which a gratifying number have been won in recent years at the most prestigious establishments.
