EVEREST CLIMB IS COMPLETE

On Thursday 1st September we completed our Sport Relief Everest Climb challenge, and achieved the total height of 8,848 metres mid-way through the Sports Attack climbing session during the morning.

Boys from St John’s Beaumont, their friends and families, members of the local Community and climbers from Sports Attack, The Gap Club and the St John’s Beaumont Summer Language School have all been climbing on the 8-metre tall climbing wall in the Dermot Gogarty Sports Centre since 22nd February, raising money for Sport Relief 2016.

Sport Relief is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, and brings the entire nation together to get active, raise money and change lives. All of the money that is raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.

To contribute to our overall total, climbers could add either 2, 5 or 8 metres, depending on the milestone that they reached each time they climbed. Those climbers who were too young to climb up the wall were still able to contribute by completing traversing challenges. Traversing is a low level (no higher than 2 metres) activity that enables them to learn how their body position can be changed to create stronger, or weaker, climbing positions in a much less daunting environment compared to if they were near the top of “Mount Beaumont”.

We are now in the process of collecting the sponsorship money that was pledged during the Sport Relief Everest Climb, and look forward to sending it to such a good cause.

Thanks go to everyone who has helped us achieve our target of climbing the height of the highest mountain in the world, for their climbing efforts, pledges and help in supervision.
